No to complacency.
In November 2006, Ilocos Norte Representative Imee Marcos suggested for the government to develop a program that will teach gays “Kung Fu or other forms of martial arts or self-defense for them to be able to defend themselves.” The urgency is needed because of the “sunud-sunod na pagpatay sa mga bakla (murder of gays one after another)”, or, possibly, “gumagalang gay killer (gay killer on the loose),” she said. With this, hate crimes against Filipino GLBTQIs come in focus - something of a necessity since gay murders have become common in the Philippines, and with many GLBTQIs even internalizing the blame for crimes committed against them.
